Materials Science

The program is dedicated to Materials Design.  This course allows students to work with metallic or non-metallic materials due to the specialization or research interests. The curriculum is organized with the aim to involve students in real scientific work – thet will carry out experimental works and develop their analytical skills.

 

Modules

Module 1. Light weight thermal conductive alloys development.

This highly industry-oriented program consists of three main parts: project development, experimental part and results discussion. Project development includes introduction lectures to the theory of thermal properties of metals and alloys. On the basis of lecture material students research group will be given a problem in light weight alloys development. Experimental part includes work with cast aluminum and its alloys. Students will do calculations, then they will melt proper compositions with necessary alloying, which is also a part of a real project research work. Results discussion part includes materials structure and properties analysis. Finally all students will improve their knowledge in material design and get skills of experimental work with light weight metals and alloys.

Module 2.  Forming and strengthening of polymer composite materials based on glass fibers.

This highly industry-oriented program principally focuses on non-metal composite materials development. The program includes lectures about composite materials development, on the basis of which, the research group of students will be given a problem. Solving problems of non metal composite materials development requires the use of highly innovative approaches with excellent understanding of structure formation processes, mechanics of strengthening and knowledge of materials behavior. Students will have experimental classes, where they can run testing their calculated or predicted technologies of forming and alloying of polymers. Students research group will improve skills of experimental work as well as skills in describing materials.

Module 3. Chemistry.

 Advanced practical tasks in chemistry of inorganic and organic compounds are oriented on improving of background knowledge of students. Very often low level of understanding chemistry does not let students to predict properties of materials which are going to be developed. The aim of this module is improving of the basic logics in Chemistry. The ratio between lecture and laboratory work is 20% lectures and 80% practical work.
